Preimplantation genetic testing examines cells from embryos created through IVF for particular genetic or chromosome-related concerns.
Understanding the terms
PGT is an umbrella term for embryo genetic testing. PGT-M examines a known single-gene condition, while PGT-SR addresses structural chromosome rearrangements. PGD is an older term used for these diagnostic approaches. PGT is a test, not a disease.
How testing fits into care
Genetic counseling and relevant family test results help establish whether testing is appropriate. Embryos are created using IVF, cells are sampled for analysis, and the findings inform decisions about embryo transfer. Embryos may be frozen while results are awaited.
Important limitations
Testing cannot rule out every health condition and may not yield a usable result for every embryo. Embryo biopsy carries risks. Discuss what a result can and cannot tell you, whether confirmatory testing in pregnancy is recommended, and the alternatives before proceeding.
