In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

IVF combines eggs and sperm in a laboratory. An embryo is then transferred to the uterus with the aim of achieving pregnancy.

When IVF may be considered

IVF may be discussed for blocked tubes, certain sperm-related problems or when other approaches have not been successful. It is not required for every fertility concern. Your doctor should explain suitable alternatives and your individual outlook.

Stages of an IVF cycle

Treatment usually includes medicines to stimulate egg development, monitoring, egg collection and laboratory fertilization. Developing embryos are assessed before transfer. Some embryos may be frozen for later use, and transfer timing depends on the clinical plan.

Making an informed decision

Ask about medicines, appointments, costs, embryo storage and the planned number of embryos to transfer. Risks include ovarian hyperstimulation, multiple pregnancy and complications of egg collection. Success varies with age and other factors; an embryo transfer does not guarantee implantation or a live birth.

This information supports a discussion with your doctor. Suitability, availability and any referral arrangements should be confirmed with the hospital. Outcomes vary with individual circumstances.
