Laser Hatching
Laser-assisted hatching is an additional laboratory procedure that creates a small opening in the outer layer surrounding an embryo.
What is embryo hatching?
An embryo is surrounded by a layer called the zona pellucida. During normal development, it must emerge from this layer before implantation. Assisted hatching uses laboratory equipment to make an opening before embryo transfer.
Is it needed for every IVF cycle?
No. Assisted hatching is a treatment add-on, and there is insufficient high-quality evidence that it improves the chance of having a baby for patients generally. An unsuccessful IVF cycle alone does not establish that a hatching problem was the cause.
Questions to ask
Ask why it is being proposed in your case, what evidence supports its use, whether it adds cost and what risks it carries. Damage to the embryo is possible. Discuss standard treatment without the add-on as well; assisted hatching cannot guarantee implantation.
