What a scan can assess
Depending on the stage of pregnancy, a scan may help estimate gestational age, identify multiple pregnancy and assess growth, anatomy, fluid and placental position.
Preparing for your scan
Ask whether you need a full bladder and bring previous reports. Some examinations use an abdominal probe; an internal scan may be suggested when it provides useful information, with your consent.
Limitations
Ultrasound cannot detect every condition. Further scans or specialist review may be recommended when findings are unclear. Scans should be performed for clinical reasons by appropriately trained professionals.
