Fetal Monitoring and NST
A non-stress test records the baby's heart rate and its response to movement to help assess wellbeing during pregnancy.
When monitoring is used
An NST may be recommended when pregnancy needs additional surveillance, such as with certain maternal conditions or concerns about growth or movement. It is not necessary for every pregnancy.
During the test
External sensors record the baby's heart rate and uterine activity. The test is non-invasive, and the team may ask you to note movements while the recording is taken.
Understanding the result
A recording is interpreted alongside your history and other findings. Further observation or tests may be needed. Reduced movement should be reported promptly even if a previous monitoring result was reassuring.
