Semen analysis assesses features of a semen sample, including sperm number, movement and shape.
Preparing the sample
Follow the laboratory's instructions about abstinence, collection and delivery. Tell the clinician about recent fever, medicines and any collection difficulties, as these may affect interpretation.
Interpreting results
Results can vary between samples. A single result cannot by itself predict whether pregnancy will occur, and repeat testing may be recommended.
Further assessment
The findings are considered alongside both partners' histories. A clinician may recommend an examination, selected additional tests or specialist referral when appropriate.
